Read more about Propellerhead unveils Reason 7 at

Fairly unexpectedly, Propellerhead has announced details of Reason 7 - the latest version of the company's popular DAW.

At first glance, it seems that this new version brings subtle tweaks compared to those in Reason 6.5. This added third-party device support via the Rack Extension format, but rather than heralding any radical overhauls, Reason 7 appears to be focused on updates that will improve your workflow.

MIDI Out is the headline feature, with a new device incorporated into Reason's rack that allows the DAW to communicate with external MIDI hardware.

It seems Propellerhead has also made some tweaks to Reason's audio tracks and mixer. It appears that audio clips can now be quantised and edited using warp markers, similar to those used by Ableton Live. Reason 7 also allows audio clips to be automatically sliced and converted to REX format for use with devices like the Dr Octo Rex Loop Player. Previously, a copy of Propellerhead's ReCycle was required to do this.

In the mixer window, it's now possible to group tracks easily, and bus tracks can be created with a right-click for simple parallel processing.

A graphic EQ window with spectrum analyser has been added to the mixer's EQ section, allowing deeper tweaks with visual feedback.

Propellerhead has also announced details of a new rack device called the Audiomatic Retro Transformer. This appears to emulate the textural qualities of vintage hardware, although full details of the effect are yet to be unveiled.

Finally, Propellerhead has updated and expanded Reason's Factory Sound Bank - promising a soundset that's suited to modern genres. Reason will also now import a wider range of audio files, including MP3, WMA and ACC formats.

Reason 7 is expected some time in the second quarter of 2013. It will be priced at 129€/$129 as an upgrade from any previous version of Reason. It will be free to anyone who purchased Reason 6/6.5 on or after 1 March 2013.

For more info, head over to the Propellerhead site.
Read more about Propellerhead unveils Reason 7 at
