After a few months of an escalating argument with DJ Sneak amongst many other furious commentators and the recent announcement of the split of Swedish House Mafia Steve Angello has been caught at the centre of more controversy and media interest.

Meanwhile, he's trying to focus on doing what he does best - producing music, DJing and developing his Size Records imprint. We caught up with him as he took the entire Size Artist roster in to Miloco Studios, London.

So it seems you've been getting grief recently…
"It's a domino effect because once somebody makes a comment everyone else suddenly follows. The easiest target is always the one people go for. I really don't give a shit.

"If I actually went through all the tracks I've worked on, helped write and produce most people would be shocked. I've worked on Pop, Rock and many other styles. I've worked on many records that ended up number one in the UK or the USA."

Are you sending people track-beds or beats then?
"No I'm asked to work on projects with people. I don't mean that in a cocky way at all, just that I'm asked and it's nice to be asked.

"I don't have to prove myself to anybody. I've been mixing records since I was 12..."

"It's fun because nobody knows it's me and I can put on this mask and work on a track that is completely different. It's a really powerful feeling because if that track is a success it gives you such a lot of self cred. Because I did it without using my name and everything else that goes with that type of personal record release. You know, I'd change everything if I was able to just be an anonymous songwriter."

Really?
"Yeah, because to be Steve Angello can be a lot of pressure. I don't mean other people put pressure on me or have a gun to my head telling me to make another single. It's personal pressure about how well each record is doing. That's why I've done records under Who's Who, Mezcal Kid and other alias's."

Is this pressure one of the factors that led to Swedish House Mafia splitting up?
"No, not at all, we've all had an amazing journey and Swedish House Mafia was something that just came about and there was never a plan set out for it to be anything. It was more successful than we could have ever imagined it to be, we had a good run and we thought it was a good time to end it. It's not the whole world. We're still here…"

People say you went commercial and critisized the sound of SHM but did things actually change with the way you Seb and Axwell made music?
"We haven't changed, if you listen to the tracks we did in 2002 to 2004 it's the same. Listen to Supermode Tell Me Why that we did in 2004. I do music at the end of the day and I don't work on records I don't like. It's not about being commercial, not being commercial whether it's pop or house. Who gives a shit?"

Will you guys have to be careful not to put out solo records that sound like the Swedish House Mafia…
"No, we haven't spoken about that, whatever. There's no plan or anything."

But SHM are all still friends?
"Yeah! Of course there's just no a plan and we've done this for a long time, y'know."

Success must be addictive though once you've had a taste of it at that level?
"Well you release a record and if it sells 1.6 million copies of course you are going to compare records butwhether we were making Antidote or Save The World I think the link is always going to be melodies, no matter what the sales figures are and the style of music people say."

"If I get one hundred good tweets I might get one bad one, but that one person is always the one who makes the most noise."

Is it nice to have the weight off your shoulders with the pressure of SHM?
"We're not there yet, we're not done quite yet. So I haven't considered it like that at the moment. There's no time for a vacation, let's put it that way. [laughs]"

There's one more single from SHM coming right?
"Well, there might be twelve who knows about long term, but for now there's one more single and the last UK show at Milton Keynes Bowl."

And of course we have to talk about the furore of DJ Sneak and beef surrounding that. What's all that about?
"So, this started out with a YouTube video of this kid filming me from the back when I played Dance Valley. I don't use headphones when I mix and he [DJ Sneak] just jumped on some conclusion from a little kid. I reached out to him and heapologizedsaying that he just didn't like all these new DJs and so on - it was a little crazy.

"If I get one hundred good tweets I might get one bad one, but that one person is always the one who makes the most noise. Imagine how I would get on with my life if I spent the amount of time hating back. Who gives a shit? I don't have to prove myself to anybody. I've been mixing records since I was 12 and have competed in DJ scratch battles where I had markers on the vinyl for my cue points so I didn't even use headphones then.

"I think it's bad hating like that because you are going to send out the wrong message to those people who don't know about the technology. Y'know how we use BPM calculators and cue points on a CDJ. If a drummer or a piano player can play tight, I think I can hit my cue points on the record tight. It's not rocket science when you've been doing it your whole life. People will always hate whatever… I guess if an athlete breaks the world record is the first thing you do is drug test him?"

www.sizerecords.com
www.facebook.com/steveangello

Stay tuned to MusicRadar for more of the Size label crew including AN21, Max Vangeli, Third Party, Qulinez and Tim Mason all talking about working together during the Miloco studio sessions in London.
Read more about Interview: Steve Angello talks Swedish House Mafia split and the DJ Sneak feud at MusicRadar.com
